I’m Not Ready…Yet

Good post in the Huff Post about not being ready to publish. I know I need to work on a few of these but definitely not #3 as I have no desire to become famous-rich, maybe, but not famous.

How many steps do you have to work on? I know I need to research the market a LOT more.

  1. I probably need to research the market and industry a little more too; I do a lot of research but it’s all from the consumer end, and I wouldn’t know where to start with trades and such. I’m not sure about number three; I don’t hope to get JK Rowling-famous or anything, but part of the hard work in the self-publishing industry is acquiring fans and becoming well-known among a small group of people. The goal isn’t big-time famous, but having a few people know about us is the only way we’ll succeed. The cool thing about blogging is that it lets you interact directly with a fanbase, which is a much more personal and useful kind of famous.

    • I hear ya. I’m torn between just wanting to write what I want to write and writing something that could be viewed as “more marketable”. I usually just write what I want to write though the story I am focused on revising now probably has better marketability than the others. We’ll see. I’m sure a couple of years ago nobody thought there was a huge market for bondage/porn erotic stories but 50 Shades blew that expectation out of the water!
I know what you are saying about the famous stuff. I mean, on one hand we want and need people to notice us in order to do what we do. On the other hand, I don’t envy anyone as famous as JK Rowling. I guess I want the happy medium. I agree about the blogging being able to connect more. I feel the same with Twitter too. I love that I can write to “celebrities” and (sometimes) get a response. So cool to have that interaction.
